On December 10th, 2024, Underoath celebrated the 20th-anniversary tour of their monumental album They’re Only Chasing Safety with a packed crowd, a high-energy performance at The Fillmore in Charlotte North Carolina. The last time I saw Underoath was back in 2009 for Warped Tour so this was a pleasant surprise to see these classic songs being played live again.
From the moment the lights dimmed, the energy from the crowd was through the roof. Kicking things off with “Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape” in which Arron performed from a couch on stage, followed by Young and Aspiring. The moment Underoath took the stage, The Fillmore was full of the sounds of the crowd singing along with the anthems of their teenage years, allowing them to relive the nostalgia of the early 2000s. Underoath, never one to shy away from delivering an intense and raw performance, did not disappoint. Lead vocalist Spencer Chamberlain’s growls still held the same guttural intensity. At the same time, Aaron Gillespie, who shared lead vocal duties with Spencer, brought his signature clean vocals to life with precision and emotion.
Underoath Setlist
The setlist for this tour was very unique. It was not a simple play-through of the album, it was carefully crafted, allowing the band to play the album in a way that would keep the crowd guessing what was next. For example, kicking their set off with “Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape” versus playing in the album order as they did on the Rebirth tour. Along-side the way the band performed the album in its entirety, each night had a different bonus set or Encore. These were songs voted on by the fans, making each show even more special. Charlotte fans were given, 3 songs from Define the Great Line, In Regards to Myself, Writing on the Walls, and There Could Be Nothing After This. Damn Excuses from Voyeurist, When the Sun Sleeps from The Changing of Times, and finally their new single, Generation No Surrender.
