In 2018, it was reported that Spotify listed Emo Rap as it’s platform’s fastest growing genre of the year. You can view that report HERE. For those unfamiliar, Emo Rap is a fusion of modern hip-hop with, you guessed it, emo music of its various sorts. As weird as that may sound, you already know some of the household names listed as part of the genre. Artists on the big stage include Post Malone, Juice WRLD (whose latest offering topped the Billboard 200), Lil Uzi Vert, and rising star Lil Xan. Other artists known for the genre who are quickly on their way to hitting that mark include Scarlxrd, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, and Nothing, Nowhere. To wrap up the mentions, the late Lil Peep and XXXTentacion were also pathways into the genre.
This brings us to a guy who has made his name known and life dedicated to rising young bands named Greg Long. Long has for the last nine years run We Are Triumphant who has been home to bands such as Neck Deep, Oh, Weatherly, Traitors, among others to help kickstart their careers. The passionate man he is about helping newer artists, Long has been planning GRXTESQUE, a new alternative rap label for upcoming artists in the genre.
About the label and one of the new artists debuting, Pink Cig, he tells us:
GRXTESQUE is a new label launching on the 29th with our first artist ✦pink cig✦. A young artist from Phoenix, AZ who has been able to mass over 150,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone monthly. With tracks like Xanny Bars 222 and Angeldust sitting in the millions. He has mainly been discovered prior via Soundcloud and being on Spotify’s official playlist ”Tear Drop” right next to the likes of Lil Peep, XXXTENTACION, Trippie Redd and more. The song ”Loser 00” takes a different approach to the traditional theme of materialism in hip hop. This track is the first single off Pink Cig’s debut album Beautiful Strangers due out this summer.
