Boston local idle just released his first single and is spreading his wings to fly into the emo pop scene. We loved the new single, “Chasing Games”, and decided to get some details from him about what made him decide to start making music and get a little history from him.
Matt: I know you’ve been in a lot of projects before, can you mention some of the different bands you’ve played with in the past and what you’ve liked about them?
Back home in North Carolina, I played in a bunch of bands such as, Ghosts Again, Never I, and Messenger Down (the latter two are still active and are absolutely worth checking out if you’re in to rock music).
I grew up listening to rock music so playing it always came naturally to me. I love the energy you could put in to it and there’s nothing that compares to playing songs you care about live. I had some of the best times of my life playing in bands and it’s definitely something that I miss and would love to do on the side.
Matt: What made you want to start making solo work?
Honestly, when I first started writing music for idle, I had just gone through a tough breakup, I had to move back in with my parents, I was on Summer break, and I had just turned 21. There was no real reason not to be drunk and sad all the time. So I did that and I started to write music to cope.
Chasing games was the first song I wrote for idle. It was my first time writing pop music. It was my first time singing on anything with even the possibility of releasing it. It was a huge experiment and it was a real turning point for me both artistically and emotionally.
When I finished writing the demo for chasing games, I thought it came out solid enough that I’d actually want to share it with people, and I thought a lot of people could relate with it. So here we are.
Matt: What are some artists that have come up recently that you think are really gonna nail it?
As far as artists that are still coming up, it’s really hard for me to say. I know a bunch of “smaller” artists and bands back home in NC that are killing it, like Messenger Down and Never I, but I don’t keep up with up-and-coming artists nearly as much as I’d like to.
Since May, I’ve been going to Berklee College of Music in Boston. I meet and interact with incredibly talented musicians every single day, and I’m super excited to see more of my friends and classmates put out their music and start their careers.
