The show started off with Tampa locals Cannibal Corpse taking the stage. The Vikings hailing from Sweden, Amon Amarth took over, complete with the bow of a ship as a drum riser! Lamb of God, coming from Richmond Virginia, we’re a fan favorite but unfortunately had their set cut short due to a fan injury in the pit. Towards the end of the 4th song, Randy noticed something was not right and stopped the band to address what was going on. From what I could tell, someone had fallen down and hit their head on the concrete and was not moving. The fans cleared a path for the security and EMT’s to help out. Not sure how long it took but it felt like 15 or so minutes. By the time everything was sorted out, they only had time for one more song. They ended with Redneck which stirred the crowd right back up.
After a career spanning a few decades, Slayer has decided to call it quits. For metalheads around the world, these guys have been a staple in our lives and we are all sad to see them stop touring. They kicked off the show with Repentless and to the excitement of everyone in attendance, tons of pyro lightning up the whole amphitheater, and quite literally heated things up. The set was about 90 minutes and went through the very lengthy discography playing all the fan favorites plus a few deeper cuts as well. 20 songs, playing songs from 9 albums, everyone who has ever heard a song by Slayer would have walked away hearing something they enjoyed. Hearing Payback and Dead Skin Mask we’re the highlights for me.
At the end of the night, all the guys came out to throw a few guitar picks, drum sticks, and setlist to the delight of everyone lucky b enough to smash something. The other members made an exit, but Tom came to the edge of the stage and just soaked it all in. He went from one side to the other and then back to the middle. Each time pausing for a few minutes just looking at the faces of everyone and was smiling ear to ear. Chants of ” Slayer! Slayer! ” Echoed throughout the entire venue. Within my little area, I heard a few people yelling ” thank you ” and throwing up their hands in the shape of a heart. After a while, Tom walked to his microphone and said “thank you to everyone who has supported this band over the years. We are going to miss you all “
